Grooming is Awesome

How can you tell if your horse loves your touch? Emilie would like to show you how much she likes her massage / brushing. Apologies for the fluctuating picture quality, the lighting wasn’t too great.

Hello. My name is Emilie. I have known this guy for roughly a month. I’ve spent more than half that month in animal hospital after colic surgery. In other words, I’ve been a stressed out little draft horse.
I’m a trusting soul but I still like to be able to see what goes on. So I wear a hairclip when I am being groomed.
Please be careful with my belly near the surgery incision. I trust you, but I’m still going to keep an eye and ear on this.
My mane, on the other hand, you cannot scratch it enough. I love this, I love this so much I am offering scratch-backs to the air.
Yessss. Behind the ears too. Yeeeesss.
I will make all the faces if you promise to never stop.
Er. Right. I like to be groomed in my box without restraints. That way, I can move around and show you where I want you to scratch me.
You are my grooming mate and if you scratch me, I scratch you. I use only my lips but you should probably not let me scratch bare skin anyway.
I give the best back massages in town.
You don’t need to worry that I will squish you or trample you. I am entirely too busy standing still and enjoying this.
That’s it! You all need to get yourself a groom minion like mine. Emilie out.

A Sunny Day in March

Emilie’s still got a wee bit of fever. We’re not getting her home Sunday. Vet tells us that it is most likely a small complication from the surgery: When they have to turn them over, the lungs get squished a little, and a teeny bit of pneumonia is a common result. She was on antibiotics after surgery, and it’s normal for it to show once she gets taken off them. Which is of course why she’s been put back on the meds. Still hoping for Tuesday.

Mood is great, and she’s not in any discomfort from it. The only thing that Emilie wishes to complain about is that she’s only allowed to walk like an old lady on a lead. She wants to buck and run and prance!

Spring sunshine exists to be enjoyed, even if we’re still only allowed short walks.
I made a new little friend today. According to herself, her name is “Mreff”.
Mreff is a bit camera shy, however.
I told you, we’re best friends now. She followed us everywhere.

Can We Go Home Now?

Emilie is getting rather bored with being cooped up at horsespital but they are going to keep her over the weekend all the same. Her surgery incision is a teeny tiny bit reddish and she’s got a hint of a fever, so just to be on the safe side, the vets want to give her a penicillin treatment before release. I want her home as soon as possible, obviously, but I am okay with this.

Guess whose husband actually goes shopping for hair accessories for little girls, I mean, 750 kilo draft horses…
Priorities. One’s bird watching, the other isn’t.
Practically a Disney princess.
Emilie actually raised her head from the grass at the sound of a stallion calling to her. She doesn’t look that impressed, though. Oh well. He was a scrawny Arabian anyway.
Hospital has a farrier shop so today we got a pedicure! … That poor lawn.
