When I paint, I often end up wasting hours searching for detailed pictures of forest floors, leaves, flowers, and plants. Aha, said I — I live in a beautiful country, surrounded by heathland, moors, and forest. I own a camera and these beautiful forest sceneries are right out there. I can get to them by car, despite my inability to walk more than a few steps. Enjoy my reference pictures.
The pictures were taken by me in Engelsholm Forest by Bredsten, Vejle, Denmark on May 11, 2025.
Incidentally…
If you’re looking for a lovely walk or bike trip, find Randbøl on a map. Do a loop around Engelsholm Lake, and proceed towards Bække on the old Army Road. You’ll be going through no less than three beautiful Danish landscapes: The farmland, the forest, and the old heathland.
A beautiful meadow opens up into the sunlit woodland, inviting you to explore!
Most oaks tend to be relatively round and compact; not so with these two. They reach for the stars.
Oak and maple woodland in Engelsholm Forest, Denmark. I love the two tiny maples trying to compete with the surrounding oak shrub. You can barely see them but they’re there.
Stinging nettles and dandelions litter the forest floor in May. The grass is not yet tall enough to drown out the dandelions and the nettles are just ripe for harvesting if you’re into natural foods.
Twin oaks with gnarled branches reaching for the light over their younger siblings. Oaks are sublime; they twist and change and grow, and each branch tells a story.
A single clump of wild bluebells brighten up the forest floor like a diva on a stage, a splash of unexpected contrast.
The sun dances across the summer sky, creating vivid contrasts on the forest floor; darkness and light, side by side, forever reaching for one another but never merging.
A forest road winds its way through the forest, like a ribbon of gravel and wildflowers through an ocean of dark green.
Tiny splotches of colour on the forest floor, easily overlooked as they hide between nettles and dandelions.
